Roof install...

So we worked on the roof now that the insulation has finally arrived. Since our roof is very simple it is quite easy to lay out the sheets. The process was as follows. Sweep the leaves off the roof. Lay down the insulation panels for a section. Find and locate the proper panel to start with, we did this by measuring a bunch and writing the lengths right on the panels. Next we would place the panel in the correct area. Then we would locate the next panel, etc. We would overlap one bump at least.

The issue arose when we arrived at the other end of the house. We were missing 66 inch's / 1.67m of material. We counted and counted, looked all over the place. Nothing to be found. They sent us 19 pieces, and we have 19 pieces. So clearly, some guy at HPM Custom Metal Roofing made a serious error in design. Fortunately its not a big issue and they will run the pattern next week. They will make 3 additional 24 foot / 7.3 meter sections.

With the insulation in place and the steel roof on top, the plywood, even the tar paper above the plywood is stone cold under the maximum heat of the sun. So we are thrilled with that so far. I suspect the sound has also been reduced greatly by the insulation also. The way they normally do steel roof's here is rather silly. They don't use plywood decking but instead only 2x4 material. However when you look into people's attics here, there is nothing but steel deck, air and then your house ceiling. So when it rains, then you can hear the patterning of rain at 3am, etc.

It was suggested by some we should put 2x4 lumber on top of our roof and screw the roof to that. I spoke to the insulation company and this particular special insulation is made for use over or under steel decking and they suggested just to screw right through it. So thats how we are doing it. The board can hold up to 20 psi weight, which is a lot before it crushes down.

Stacking our insulation panels up on our scaffolding made it easier to get it on the roof.

Laying our insulation over our tar paper.

Steel deck over insulation panels.

The insulation has a specific way of laying it down. They specify which side is top and which is bottom.

Whoever used our excellent engineering drawings to make the roof did not do a good job! We have a huge 66 inch missing section with no material!
